University of Chicago Student Wellness Center
The project consolidates three departments from the University of Chicago’s Student Health and Counseling Services into a single facility to create the new Student Wellness Center. Combining old and new, the design incorporates two wings of an existing historic hospital linked by a glassy modern addition. The juxtaposition of these diverse elements into a single cohesive facility provides a lively series of spaces that also include a landscaped outdoor courtyard.
The solution incorporates principles of health and wellness, sustainability, and best practices for medical planning to achieve LEED Gold. The facility was completed during the 2020 peak of the coronavirus pandemic, proving its effectiveness during this challenging period of a public health crisis. UrbanWorks’ role as associate architect included code, accessibility, peer review, and LEED support for Wight & Company.
