UIC Math & Science Learning Center

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Math & Science Learning Center repurposes a 9,000-square-foot former science library space within the architecturally significant Walter Netsch-designed SES Building. UrbanWorks’ bright new palette mitigates the space’s internal location with no access to natural light, and emphasizes its double-height volume while using an awkward column in the center of the octagonal room to focus a central gathering area that supports multiple team learning spaces, one-on-one tutoring areas, laptop kiosks and administrative support spaces.

Boldly patterned and perforated panels provide spatial separation for the more private areas while allowing shared light through a thoughtful and playful design that enlivens the spaces. Every detail is designed to provide a vibrant and inspirational solution that supports individual student’s academic success while improving student retention and graduation rates.

Based on Netsch’s “Field Theory” of architecture, the building’s unusual geometries have vexed faculty, staff, and students since the building’s completion as part of UIC’s noted original campus design in the 1960s. UrbanWorks’ Math & Science Learning Center reimagines one of these quirky original spaces and provides a template for thoughtful adaptation that preserves architecturally significant elements while repurposing them for contemporary needs.
