South Loop Elementary School Interiors
UrbanWorks designed the interiors of the South Loop Elementary School to inspire its student’s imaginations, encourage effective communication, and create a supportive environment where young citizens of this relatively new Chicago community can thrive.
Spaces in this LEED for Schools Silver certified building are organized using color theory and aspirational phrases to provide visual cues that promote diversity, peace, and wisdom. The design fosters a sense of community and belonging for students from multiple ethnicities and cultures within a singular learning environment for the Chicago Public Schools.
Color is combined with subtle architectural gestures, organizing circulation through memorable wayfinding techniques. Boldly patterned floors denote corridors and primary gathering spaces. Feature walls utilize different colors on each floor. Supergraphics will be installed in designed locations, with murals created by the students.
