Cermak-McCormick Green Line Station

A brand-new station on the Chicago Green Line establishes a strong design presence through a perforated stainless steel and polycarbonate tube that shelters the existing tracks and new platform from the elements while providing abundant natural light. The station expands access to the CTA’s transit system at a location that serves over a half-million passengers a year from the diverse South Loop, Bronzeville, and Chinatown communities as well as McCormick Place, the nation’s largest convention center, and its adjacent dining and entertainment district, just one block east.

As Associate Architect, UrbanWorks oversaw a process that created a memorable gateway station that incorporated a narrow right-of-way with no suspension of service or track relocation. The structure’s low-maintenance materials will provide CTA riders with protection from wind, rain, and snow for years to come.
