UrbanWorks’ new John Hancock College Prep High School was featured before an international audience at the recent American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture 2022 in Chicago. Marie Kohne, AIA; Maria Pellot, AIA; with Loren Johnson of Legat, led the tour of the new school in the city’s Clearing neighborhood near Midway Airport.
2019 ALA Interior Award winning offices of UrbanWorks opened its doors for the Chicago Architecture Center yearly Open House Chicago. UrbanWorks welcomed over nine hundred visitors to its offices located in the vintage National Building in the Chicago Loop.

UrbanWorks is excited to participate in the upcoming 2018 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago. Two of our LEED certified buildings are part of Greenbuild tours being held on November 16th and 17th. Galewood Elementary School (LEED Silver) will be toured as part of “Innovation in K-12 Education,” and Veterans Memorial Campus (LEED Gold) will be featured as part of “Charter Schools Raising the Bar”. On September 23, UrbanWorks was featured in the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial Chicago Women in Architecture Walking Tour, which highlighted sites in downtown Chicago designed by female architects. UrbanWorks’ restoration of Buckingham Fountain was among the six sites featured on the walking tour. The Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) is the largest architecture and design exhibition in North America. Read more
UrbanWorks’ Sustainability Coordinator, Tej Varpe, volunteered for the USGBC Illinois Chapter Green Built Home Tour of +Plus House in Pilsen on Saturday, July 22. +Plus Houses are affordable, LEED Certified homes. Eleven High Performance Green Homes were featured, including those with high efficiency envelopes, foam insulated foundation, smart furnaces, CarbonCure concrete and radon venting. Each +Plus House was also solar ready. Read more
UrbanWorks welcomed the I-NOMA (Illinois chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects) General Body Meeting to our office on March 22, 2017. Ameera Ashraf-O’Neil, UrbanWorks’ Senior Project Manager, led a firm tour and introduction. NOMA’s mission is to champion diversity within the design professions by promoting the excellence, community engagement, and professional development of its members. I-NOMA is a local chapter and subdivision of NOMA, which encompasses a community of design professionals committed to impacting Chicago through design and education.
UrbanWorks Communications Associate and Business Manager, Maya Ruiz, led public tours of the exhibition “Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye” for the Art Institute of Chicago Family Festival. The tour engaged families with children under 12 with concepts of visual language, cultural context and socially-responsible design. The Family Festival served over 300 visitors with free arts programming in the museum’s Ryan Education Center. The “Making Place” exhibition is a Partner Program of the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Read More
Patricia Saldaña Natke, UrbanWorks Design Principal, is a panelist at the SAH (Society of Architectural Historians) Saturday April 18, 2015 National Conference at the Gatz Center, 126 E. Chestnut. The half day program will address the issues of community and preservation in Chicago neighborhoods and Chicago Waterways. The day’s other panelists include Martin Felson, Jeanne Gang, Carol Ross Barney, and Robert Bruegman. Keynote address by Charles Waldheim of the Harvard School of Design. Read More
UrbanWorks’ Galewood Charter School was part of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Annual Emerging Chicago bus tour. The tour began at the CAF with an overview of the Lecture Hall Exhibit, followed by a stop at the GEMS World Academy, Clark Park Boathouses, and ending at the Galewood Charter School.
