PechaKucha is a presentation style which began in Tokyo. 20 images are shown, each for 20 seconds. They are informal gatherings where creative people get together and share ideas, works, and thoughts. PechaKucha Nights happen in over 900 cities. Patricia Saldaña Natke was a speaker at TEDx UChicago, on April 30, 2016 at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts Performance Hall. The theme of this year’s conference was On the Margins, which focused on “the grey area between established knowledge and new theory”. Pat’s lecture, “Architecture & Design: Renewing the Social Agenda”, spoke to her view that architectural solutions can be, and ought to be, societal solutions. Her talk included highlights of UrbanWorks’ Pilsen Master Plan, La Casa Student Housing, and Re-Imagining the South Branch of the Chicago River. Patricia Saldaña Natke, Maria Pellot and Ameera Ashraf-O’Neil joined Chicago-area residents in On the Table discussions in May 2016. Patricia participated in the conversation, “The State of Civic Engagement in Chicago” led by New Civics Chicago; Maria Pellot participated in “Envisioning Equitable Communities” led by Enterprise Community Partners, Inc.; and Ameera participated in “Creative Solutions to House and Feed all Chicagoans” led by the Society of Architectural Historians. On the Table is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust and is an annual forum designed to elevate civic conversation, foster new relationships and create a unifying experience across the Chicago-area. Thousands of residents participated in small-group conversations intended to inspire new ways to work together to make communities stronger, safer and more dynamic.

UrbanWorks Communications Associate and Business Manager, Maya Ruiz, led public tours of the exhibition “Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye” for the Art Institute of Chicago Family Festival. The tour engaged families with children under 12 with concepts of visual language, cultural context and socially-responsible design. The Family Festival served over 300 visitors with free arts programming in the museum’s Ryan Education Center. The “Making Place” exhibition is a Partner Program of the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Read More
UrbanWorks Designer, Tim Wang, will be featured with seven other artists and architects at Forming Functions, as part of this year’s Chicago Artists Month. The event, held at the Euro Furniture, will be a series of talks allowing the artists and architects to discuss “their work and the ability of the arts and architecture to shape the functions of community, culture and our everyday lives.” Tim will be speaking about “The Sustainable Future of Architecture.” The event will be held on October 24th, from noon until 4:30 pm, at 2145 W. Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL.

Invited civic organizations presented their visions for the Adaptive reuse of the Old Cook County Hospital. The Metropolitan Planning Council’s team: UrbanWorks, Brininstool Lynch, DLA Piper, Jones Lang LaSalle, Gorman & Co., MacRostie, Kretchmer, Primera Engineers, Sterling Bay, and the Chicago Public Art Group envisioned a new EPICENTER to serve as a hub, locus, nerve center for the City of Chicago. UrbanWorks’ concept – EPICENTER: WORK, LIVE, HEAL led by Principal Patricia Saldaña Natke, Associate Principal Maria Pellot and Designer Jose Esquinca, celebrated and captured the spirit of the original building as an urban office campus with conference space, student housing, assisted living, a child care center, and healing gardens. Patricia Saldaña Natke selected as a Design Resource Team Member for the AHDLI – Chicago two day charette. Enterprise Community Partners convened its 4th Annual AHDLI to explore the role of design through the lens of seven development projects and intensive dialogue between developers and architects. Patricia was a panelist for the opening keynote, The Multiplier Effect, by Robert Ivy, the Executive VP and CEO of the American Institute of Architects. Patricia presented a design case study of the LaCasa Student Housing in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Read more
