Tim Wang to Speak at Forming Functions Artist Talks

UrbanWorks Designer, Tim Wang, will be featured with seven other artists and architects at Forming Functions, as part of this year’s Chicago Artists Month. The event, held at the Euro Furniture, will be a series of talks allowing the artists and architects to discuss “their work and the ability of the arts and architecture to shape the functions of community, culture and our everyday lives.” Tim will be speaking about “The Sustainable Future of Architecture.” The event will be held on October 24th, from noon until 4:30 pm, at 2145 W. Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL.

Kate D. Lengacher Participates in Green Apple Day of Service

UrbanWorks Designer, Kate D. Lengacher, volunteered at El Valor Inclusion Center in the Pilsen community for the Green Apple Day of Service. El Valor is a non-profit community-based organization that provides educational, career and socio-economic support services to children, people with disabilities and their families. Kate joined other volunteers and community members to paint a mural in the El Valor’s garden that promotes sustainability and community support. UrbanWorks Participates in A Safe Haven Run

Team Urbanworks participated in A Safe Haven’s Run to End Homelessness on Sunday July 13, 2015 at the historic Douglas Park in Chicago. Congrats to John Green of Groundwork for placing 4th in his age category and Erick Roldan of Urbanworks for placing 25th in his age category! Urbanworks thanks team members from BASE Engineers and Groundwork. All proceeds go to A Safe Haven Foundation, a not for profit dedicated to providing shelter to help transform lives.

Robert Natke Joins AIA CAE Higher Education Subcommittee

UrbanWorks’ Vice President, Robert Natke, recently joined the Higher Education Subcommittee for AIA’s Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE). Rob brings over ten years of experience in directing design, construction and planning departments at several Chicago area major private universities to this AIA National Committee. The mission of this group is multifold; to develop a knowledge sharing network of individuals making a significant contribution to the design and planning of higher education projects; to create programming to foster collaboration between members; to develop webinars exploring issues on current trends; and to generate presentations and programming for annual AIA meetings.

UrbanWorks Designs Paseo Boricua Arts Building

The greatly anticipated project will transform seven buildings on the 2700 Block of West Division Street, including the former site of Ashland Sausage Company—vacant since 2005—into the first-ever cultural building in Chicago with a holistic focus on providing live/work space and promoting the talents of local artists in various media.  The building will offer 15 live/work residences for artists and their families; a 99 seat multi-media theater with film, theatre, and concert performances; and a nearly 3,000 square foot art gallery with a retail component allowing resident and local artists to sell their artworks.  A piano lounge showcasing wines from Latin America and spirits from the Caribbean will become an anchor for nightlife on the Paseo Boricua corridor. Florida International University’s ‘Leaders of Design’

Maria Pellot, Associate Principal at UrbanWorks, was highlighted as part of Florida International University’s ‘Leaders of Design’ Alumni Exhibition + Panel Discussion for their School of Architecture. The exhibition, running from February 5th – March 19th, 2015, features the work of 28 alumni working in the fields of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental and Urban Design. Maria’s work on the Veterans Memorial School, Galewood School, La Casa Student Housing, Living Green Building and Epicenter: Work|Live|Heal projects were on display as part of the exhibit. The opening night panel discussion was moderated by Professor Jason Chandler, Chair of the FIU Department of Architecture. It included a panel of ten alumni, discussing their education at FIU and how it prepared them for careers at design firms in the United States and abroad. Read more
