Nathan S. Davis Elementary: Space to Grow
Located in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, Nathan S Davis Elementary is one of ten schoolyard transformations. This program through Space to Grow is an innovative partnership between the Metropolitan Water Management District, Chicago Public Schools, Healthy Schools Campaign and Openlands which transforms Chicago schoolyards into vibrant spaces to play and learn outside, while helping neighborhoods reduce urban flooding.
The new site design at Davis Elementary includes outdoor classrooms, native plantings throughout the yard, as well as three new age-appropriate playgrounds. A stormwater management system is integrated across the campus which can capture 150,000 gallons of rain. Additionally, the renovated campus incorporates a turf field, a basketball court and surface track to promote physical wellness for students and community members.
