UofC Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge
UrbanWorks renovated and expanded a historic Hyde Park residence into a 21st century incubator for the for the Formation of Knowledge at the University of Chicago. A new three-story-tall glass and metal bay on the building’s University Avenue façade provides a light-filled accessible entrance to reflect the institute’s ambitious non-departmental, non-divisional inquiry into the factors shaping legitimized knowledge of both past and present. Existing spaces were reconfigured to create meeting and seminar spaces, offices, a taberna, and outdoor deck.
The brick and limestone Georgian style home was designed by noted Chicago architect Howard van Doren Shaw in 1897 for sociologist George Edgar Vincent, who served as president of the Chautauqua Institution, the University of Minnesota, and the Rockefeller Foundation. UrbanWorks’ creative reimagination extends the building’s unique legacy as a welcoming venue to support a new generation of scholars and researchers.
